Dressing the bridesmaids
WE HAVE all heard past horror stories of bridesmaid dresses which used to be unsightly confections overflowing with lace, puffs, flounces and can-can, that no one would ever dream of wearing again. The modern trend in bridesmaid attire is to have more versatile or simple dresses or separates (skirt and bodice) that may have a better chance of seeing the light of day again, after the wedding!
Actually, your first task in choosing bridesmaid attire is to choose your bridal gown. The reason for this is that the bridal gown sets the tone of the wedding. It can be used to determine the formality of the wedding — for example a ball gown-styled dress connotes more of a formal affair, while a white slip dress would be more appropriate for a beach wedding. It is generally better to choose the bride’s gown before choosing the bridesmaids’ dresses, so that the entire tone of the wedding is consistent.
Next, you should decide on a flattering colour or colour scheme for the bridesmaid dresses. This colour may match or be complementary to your chosen wedding decor colours. Ideally, you should also choose dress styles to suit each bridesmaid’s body type. It is perfectly acceptable to have more than one dress type in your bridal party. The A-line dress style usually looks good on most women. Also, remember that you would want their jewelry, shoes, hosiery and handbags to be co-ordinated and in proportion to their body types as well. However, keep your budget in mind since expensive fabric and handmade details can add up!
