Diego man jailed 15 years for manslaughter
A DIEGO MARTIN man, convicted of manslaughter, was yesterday sentenced to 15 years with hard labour. Sitting in the Port-of-Spain First Criminal Court, Justice Herbert Volney told Emmanuel “Muslim” King that in handing down the sentence, “I let others know that arming themselves and committing crimes with illegal firearms” would result in sentences “on the greater, rather than the lesser end.” King, of Factory Road, Diego Martin, was on trial for the October 20, 2001 murder of Bruce Wilson. He was found guilty on Friday of the lesser count of manslaughter by reason of provocation.
In delivering a mitigation plea, King’s attorney Keith Scotland asked the judge to consider the facts that his client was an industrious member of society and that he had strong familial ties. The 41-year-old father of three daughters of ages 12, 15, and 16, had already been convicted and sentenced for the firearm offences relative to the shooting death of Wilson, according to Scotland. He added that his client had been incarcerated for three years since he had been charged with the murder.
