New talented extempore singers discovered

Several new talented extempore singers were discovered at the preliminary stage of this year’s competition held at the Kavemar Pub, Henry Street, Port-of-Spain last Tuesday. And four of them will be gunning for Blacksage’s title come next Thursday. Newcomers Zano, Orin Richards, Jason Ewing and Brian London will join former Extempore Monarch Sheldon John, Lingo, Lady Africa and Shortpants in the battle for the title.

Last Tuesday’s show started with 17 competitors who each sang four verses on a range of topics such as “Safety Measures for Carnival,” “Sipping Tea Cup in Parliament,” “I Love Food,” “All Kinds of Landslides,” “Tsunami” and Hurricane Ivan.” After the first round, 12 were chosen for the semi-final round which included Zano, Lady Africa, Shortpants, Sheldon John, Lingo, Wendell Ettiene, Mark John, Organiser and Brian London. This round proved to be very competitive. Eventually seven contestants were chosen to oppose Blacksage in the final. Music for the night was supplied by Sly Dopson and the Kaiso Boys. Several guest artistes performed while the judges tabulated the results.
