Prisons Commissioner deems them ‘not dangerous’
NEWLY appointed Commissioner of Prisons John Rougier wants to assure readers and the general public that their lives were never in danger following the escape of 10 youths from the Youth Training Centre on Monday morning. “In the first place,” he explained, “they never escaped custody, they absconded. They were never in prison, they were housed here because there was no room at the Boys’ Industrial School where they were sent by the court.
“These boys’ were never dangerous, the public never had anything to fear nor was there ever any high risk involved. They were badly behaved boys who were sent to the BIS. “What has happened they damaged some louvres in the dormitory where they were housed, but we were able to contain them to the southern side of the prison in the bushes over the highway where nine of the escapees where recovered within a short space of time . The tenth boy was recaptured yesterday morning”.
According to reports the ten youths who escaped around 1.30am Monday were recaptured by joint army teams, hiding in the bushes, opposite the Maximun Security Prison. Earl West aka ‘Silent Killa’15 was recaptured around 4 pm yesterday by two patrolling officers of the Airports Authority, while walking along Golden Grove Road, Arouca, in the vicinity of Kataserv. “Yes we are doing our job, but there was a lapse and security was breached”, continued Rougier. “And should we find anyone responsible during our investigations we will take the necessary action.” Before ending, Rougier insisted again in ensuring the public that they were never in danger.
