TT soldier honoured with parade through St James

TIME STOOD STILL throughout the streets of St James yesterday, as members of the TT Regiment and TT Coast Guard celebrated the life of 24-year-old Private Ruben Cabbler of Laventille, a TT Regiment soldier who was fatally shot in the neck last week Wednesday.

Businesses were shut down as hundreds lined the streets of St James to catch a glimpse of the Military Gun Carriage which took the casket from the St Agnes Anglican Church to the Military Cemetery in St James.

Members of the TT Regiment and TT Coast Guard led a solemn march to the Military Cemetery, where Cabbler received full military rites.

Cabbler’s father, Corporal Ruthven Cabbler, delivered the eulogy on the life of his first born son. Private Cabbler attended St Barbs Government Primary School, where he got the nickname "Birdie." Corporal Cabbler said his son "was miserable at that time, and loved to eat a lot."

Cabbler said his son loved to play football during his days at Barataria Junior Secondary School, and still continued playing while in the TT Regiment.

Corporal Cabbler described his son as easy-going, devoting attention to his other siblings and sharing a close relationship with his parents. "He did odd jobs such as delivering pizza, KFC and Royal Castle before landing his dream career," said Cabbler.

Delivering the homily was Reverend Pam Padarathsingh-Greaves, who said the society needed to show more love, and smile a bit more.
