Ansa McAl Training Centre destroyed by fire
The Ansa McAL building located at St Vincent Street and South Quay, Port-of-Spain, was destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. At 1.30 am, an E999 unit was patrolling the area and noticed that the building was on fire. The 80-year-old, Ansa McAL building, which was formerly known as the Gordon Grant building, housed the Windsor Construction Company and the Ansa McAL Training Centre. Twenty-five firefighters from Woodbrook, San Juan, Belmont and Wrightson Road Fire Stations, responded to the call at 2 am. However, at 9 am, the fire re-ignited. Police officers stationed in front of the property called the Fire Services. Firefighters from the Wrightson Road Fire Station responded to the call. Ansa McAL’s property manager, Randolph De Silva, told Newsday the building had significant historical value. "We trained employees here and now they will be relocated. We also held functions here," he said. An employee from the Inland Revenue Division who was passing by recalled the building being on fire on three previous occasions. Fire Station Officer Bruce estimated the damage to the building at $2 million and stocks at $400,000. The cause of the fire is still to be determined. No one was injured.
