Gang member gunned down at George Street

Gang-related violence erupted in broad daylight outside the Port-of-Spain Health Centre on George Street, when a 33-year-old gang member was riddled with bullets at 10 am yesterday.

Lloyd Romero left his Duncan Street home in Port-of-Spain early yesterday, and went to the health centre for treatment of an old wound.

On leaving the health centre, Romero, who had his jersey pulled over his face, was confronted by two gunmen.

The killers began firing at Romero, hitting him throughout his body.

He was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

When Newsday visited the murder scene yesterday, the health centre was closed to the public, and traumatised employees were sent home early.

At the dead man’s home, relatives shied away from speaking with the media.

Newsday learnt that a war had broken out between rival gang members from Upper Duncan Street and Lower Duncan Street.

Three people have been killed as a result of the gang war, and more deaths are expected.

A party of officers led by Snr Supt Errol Denoon and including acting Insp Sahadeo Singh yesterday returned to the scene of the shooting and carried out investigations.

An anti-crime plan aimed at dealing with the upsurge in gang-related murders and shootings was put in place.

All areas along George and Duncan Streets in Port-of-Spain will now have a "round the clock" police and army presence.
