Residents protest bad roads in Claxton Bay
SCORES of residents frustrated by the deplorable road conditions at Sum Sum Hill, Claxton Bay, staged a protest early yesterday morning. About 100 residents assembled at Diamond Road, Sum Sum Hill, from as early as 5 am to block the road with old water tanks, refrigerators and stoves. Tyres were also burned in the middle of the road. The incident caused a massive traffic pile-up which forced police to rush to the scene. Area resident Horris Alexander told Newsday that several attempts were made to contact the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation (CTTRC) about the road condition over the past few weeks. "We have been trying to get the attention of the corporation but to present, nothing," Alexander said. Area councillor Shaffimoon Taj said that trucks transporting sand from the Windsor Sandpit to the Point Lisas Industrial Estate have damaged the road, making it impassable. "The vehicles are too heavy for the road," Taj added. Firemen attached to the Couva Fire Station arrived on the scene and extinguished the tyres. The debris was removed by a CTTRC backhoe. CTTRC chairman Jeewan Mugroo told Newsday that repair works on the road would commence soon. He said, "I have had discussions and the road repairs will begin either this week or next week for the latest."
