Boy, 5, crushed by father’s car
A five-year-old mentally challenged boy, who has a twin brother, was killed on the spot yesterday when he was struck by a car driven by his father in a freak accident at the boy’s Floral Drive home in Longdenville on Monday evening. Tre Harilal suffered massive head and internal injuries and was pronounced dead at the Chaguanas Health Centre. His father, Augustus Harilal, an assistant manager at the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) in St Joseph, remained in a state of shock yesterday. The autopsy on the death of the boy, which was scheduled for yesterday at the Port-of-Spain Mortuary, was postponed for today because of the unavailability of a pathologist. Emotional and shocked relatives of the dead child were too distraught to be interviewed yesterday. At the home of the dead child yesterday, relatives refused to be interviewed, insisting they are still trying to come to terms with the death. Tre’s twin brother remained inside the house with his grandmother. Reports revealed that around 6.40 pm on Monday, Harilal was driving his Nissan B-12 Sentra car into his garage, when Tre, who was standing in the gallery of the house, ran in front of the car driven by his father. He was thrown into the air and against a concrete wall. The unconscious child was rushed to the Chaguanas Health Centre by his father and other relatives. Dr Indarjit Birja pronounced the child dead on arrival at the health centre. Harilal was interviewed by Sgt Hoggart Lumy and PC Jitendra Toolaram. He gave a statement and police are treating the death as accidental. Senior officers said yesterday that based on the information received, no foul play was suspected in the child’s death. A report on the accident will be sent to Snr Supt Mayers, head of the Central Division, for his directions in the matter.
