UNC man leads in PNM Council
IN an unusual move at last Thursday’s Statutory meeting of the PNM-controlled Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation, an opposition member was chosen to head a House committee. He is Councillor Omahdath Ramkissoon who was named chairman of the Utilities and Information Technology Committee. Ramkissoon is the representative on the corporation for the Caura/Paradise/Tacarigua Electoral District. After he was named by Pat Mejias, chairman of the corporation, to head the committee, Ramkissoon told Newsday he was pleased to have been chosen.
“I am very thankful for the trust the chairman of the council has placed in me. I hope to do all I can to uplift the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation and will work hand in hand with the chairman and all members of the corporation.” There are four United National Congress members of the corporation and nine PNMites. In addition, the PNM has two aldermen on the council. Last Thursday’s lengthy meeting dealt with a number of issues affecting the Tunapuna/Piarco region.
A resolution was passed that the council inform one of the corporation’s scavenging contractors, Amalgamated Sanitation Company Limited, about the unsatisfactory work done by the company. It was learnt that “100 percent assigned work” was not completed in Area 6 which embodies Lopinot Road and La Florissante River Bridge. It was also resolved that the scavenging contract of J Cassar and L Frederick be rescinded, due to faulty work.
