Lands for ex-Caroni workers almost complete
THE assigning of Caroni lands to former workers of the now defunct Caroni (1975) Ltd is now “95 percent complete,” Minister in the Ministry of Finance Christine Sahadeo told the media during Thursday’s post-Cabinet news conference at Whitehall. She said all 7,000 former workers who applied for land would be assigned their two-acre plot by the end of this month. She said Government was working to ensure that the former employees could begin planting on their lots “right away.”
She said the Commissioner of State Lands had increased the staff in that department to prepare the 7,000 leases “on a timely basis.” Former workers would first receive a letter telling them to which lot they have been assigned, she said. She added that they would be in a position on the basis of this letter to begin agricultural work on the plot. Sahadeo said the infrastructure was also being done. She said she would give details on the residential lots later on. She noted that because these involved much more infrastructural work “the time line is slightly longer” (than that for the agricultural plots).
