Rogue inmate may face charges

No charges have been laid to date on the inmate at the Maximum Security Prison who assaulted prison officer, Courtney Charles last month.

Charles was in charge of 80 inmates at Section E (Chaos) at the penitentiary, when the inmate assaulted him with a baton. The inmate had been allowed out for "air time" which is a recreational period for the inmates. Charles suffered head injuries and a fractured ankle.

Officers at the Maximum Security Prison told Sunday Newsday that the inmate is no longer in an isolated cell and is even allowed air time. "He is permitted to go out after the other inmates return to their cell. The other inmates are upset with what he did," an officer said. The inmate is also reported to be in good health.

The North Eastern Division Police has not laid any charges, and senior officers claim that they were not permitted to interview the inmate.

The Superintendent of Prisons will hold a one-man tribunal with the inmate and a report will be forwarded to the Commissioner of Prisons.

Secretary General of the Prison Officers Association was not available for comment.
