Cops provide statements

SEVERAL detectives at the Princes Town Police Station yesterday gave statements to Southern Division Snr Supt Nadir Mohammed in connection with the probe launched into the disappearance of cocaine exhibits.

Mohammed visited the Princes Town Police Station yesterday morning, where he interviewed a number of policemen. The 73 packets of cocaine were first lodged at the station after they were allegedly seized from the home of a New Grant couple in August 2000.

The husband and wife were freed last week in the San Fernando High Court by Justice Herbert Volney and a nine-member jury. The acquittal came after the police complainant Sgt Alpheus displayed to the court that 32 of the 73 packets were empty.

The detectives were required to provide statements on what they knew about the movement of the seized narcotics, which had been valued at more than $14 million. The judge issued a strong plea for an investigation.

Newsday was told that Mohammed had asked several police officers to provide written statements on their contact with the exhibits and its lodging in the station for safe-keeping.

The investigation is continuing.
