Versatile hair style with weaves

In conversation recently, with some acquaintances whom I consider to be above-average intelligence, it became clear to me that many people were harbouring misconceptions on the reasons why others may choose to have a weave style (hair extensions).  Among these misconceptions are:-

• Only persons whose hair cannot grow long will use a weave.
• No need to use a weave if your hair is long.
• No need for a weave if your hair is straight.

These comments all give the impression that people with weaves have no choice because they do not have enough natural hair. Though this may be true at times, it is not always so…This article is intended to keep you informed and I could not let these comments pass without attempting to correct and advise on the facts. We readily agree that there are some people who are suffering from alopecia who use weaves.  However, most people who wear weaves do so for style or comfort.

Society places great demands on a working woman who cares for children, husband and home while desiring a personal appearance that will be easy to maintain while pursuing professional and personal goals. After the initial time required for having the weave placed, one can enjoy relatively trouble free, low maintenance and versatile hair style.  There is also the added bonus of an entirely different look without having to apply harsh chemicals to one’s own hair.  Thus, weaving a choice rather than a necessity.

What is wrong with enhancing one’s personal appearance?  We were not born with clothes yet we wear clothes… different styles and colours to suit the occasion or mood… Similarly, weaving provides us with the opportunity to change our hair colour, texture or style to suit the occasion or the mood... Some persons have come into the salon for weaves or braids, just for a particular function or occasion. They want an easy hairstyle that will enhance their glamorous look and not require high maintenance.  Notice when it rains the people with braids and weaves are far less concerned about having their hairstyles ruined. Try a weave, as long as it is professionally done it will not damage your hair only enhance it.

Question: How often should I have my weave tightened?

Answer: Tightening a weave is quite technical and is only possible with the stitching techniques.  However, as long as the movement is more than half an inch, the row should be removed and replaced since attempts at tightening can cause the thread to cut natural hair, very much as a scissors can.
