A lesson in sacrifice and determination
Aliyah Johnson, the third Open Scholarship Winner in Drama, attended Bibi Fatima and Blackman’s Junior Schools. She obtained five one’s at CXC level, A-level A’s in Literature, Geography and GP and B in History, and is already pursuing a Liberal Arts Degree at Wilson College in Pennsylvania. The fourth of Lars and Cheryl Johnson four children, was surprised when her parents passed on the news. However, says her father, "she has been talking about Oxford University from Form Three and it remains her first choice." Deputy Head Girl, Shinelle Grant, 19, won a Further Add-itional Scholarship, having come to BAHS from Newtown Girls RC. She obtained seven one’s at CXC, A’s at A-levels in Business Studies, Economics, Spanish and GP, is already studying Management Studies at UWI St Augustine, and hopes to go abroad to do her Masters. "As Deputy Head Girl it was difficult at times to have balance with the added responsibility" says the only child of Dexter and Francisca Grant Nineteen-year-old Megan Nunes, a further additional scholarship winner, is a former student of Newtown Girls RC. The youngest of Patricia and Ricardo Nunes’ three children, she obtained seven ones and an A at CXC, and A-level A’s in Biology, Chemistry and Math, and B in G.P. Megan is taking a year off to work with Caribbean Shipping Agencies, and hopes to go to the United States, but is still undecided on a field of study.
Ciana-Marie Pegus, winner of an Additional Scholarship, is 18, and attended The Hampshire Primary School in London, before coming to BAHS in Form one, where she received seven CXC one’s and A-level A’s in French, Spanish and History, and a B in GP. The daughter of Ruth and Clive Pegus is studying Law at Nottingham University. Alicia Hector, 18, an Additional Language winner, went to BAHS from the Arouca Government Primary School, and obtained six one’s and two A’s at CXC, and A-level A’s in Spanish, French, Business Studies and GP. She is the only daughter of Bernadine and Glenford Hector’s two children, and is at UWI studying French and Economics. Keima Gardiner, 19, ranked fifth in the world in A-level Geography — and was awarded a government scholarship. The former student of St Catherine’s Private School on Pembroke Street obtained seven one’s at CXC, placing first in Geography, and A’s in A-level Geography, Biology and GP and C in Chemistry. She is already studying Environmental and Natural Resource Management with Geography at UWI. The middle child of Mary James and Keith Gardiner, was Games Captain of BAHS.
