Motorist suspended for running red light

The Appeal Court has made it known that it intends to get tough with motorists who run red traffic lights. The court showed its displeasure yesterday for the offence when the court refused to reinstate a driver’s permit to Gary Woo Chong, which was suspended for 15 weeks by Magistrate Anna Ryan. In addition, Ryan had fined Chong $300. Chong was convicted of running a red light at the intersection of Uriah Butler and Churchill Roosevelt Highways, and was sentenced on July 15, 2003.

He appealed on the ground that the magistrate exceed her jurisdiction when she suspended his permit for 15 weeks, and claimed that the sentence was unduly severe as this was his first offence, and that he depended on driving to make a living. Justices of Appeal Roger Hamel-Smith and Wendell Kangaloo did not think the magistrate exceeded her jurisdiction, and in fact believed she was correct to suspend the licence because of the numerous traffic offences on the roads.
