Kidnap victim released after hefty ransom paid

After spending 34 days in the hands of kidnappers, Tessa Ramdath Maharaj was released near her Valsayn home at 11.50 pm on Monday.

Maharaj, 26, was snatched outside Cost Plus Ten at Valpark Shopping Plaza on October 18.

The traumatised woman was treated by a doctor and remained inside her Valsayn home yesterday.

Police reports revealed that the woman was released near Watts Street, Curepe. Her sister Ria reportedly negotiated with the kidnappers and a ransom was agreed on late Monday. Tessa was met by relatives and taken to a doctor.

After the money was dropped off in South Trinidad, Maharaj was released.

Newsday learnt that a hefty ransom was paid. A relative who preferred to remain anonymous told Newsday that the kidnappers did not contact the family for ten days and they were able to speak with only one of the abductors on Monday.

This resulted in resumed negotiations. The freed woman told police investigators that she was kept handcuffed in a house. She was allowed to change her clothing, fed meals and was allowed to bathe and use the bathroom.

Maharaj said she was not abused or beaten. She is expected to be treated abroad for stress.

Officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad are investigating.
