King: Who will judge the judges?

INDEPENDENT Senator Mary King has called for the Judicial and Legal Services Commission (JLSC) to be placed before the scrutiny of parliamentary committees.

Speaking yesterday in the Senate on a crime motion, King wanted to know how judges can judge themselves if they are not subject to scrutiny.

She said it was time that they appeared before the Joint Select Committees of Parliament, noting that they were also not required to declare their assets, even if it was in the Constitution.

She wondered how judges can judge themselves if they were to become a law unto themselves. "How can we view them as role models?"

"There is no effective judicial system and no scrutiny of the JLSC."

Commenting on the recent crime talks between Government and the Opposition, King said she was appalled that there was no mention on how to deal with drugs as it related to crime. She suggested that the solution to crime was more than a demonstration to "take back your country."
