Christmas lights for Brian Lara Promenade

THE OFFICIAL lighting of the Brian Lara Promenade took place yesterday in Port-of-Spain, when the switch was turned on at 6 pm to illuminate Independence Square.

The event for the past three years has been the brainchild of the Promenade Management Association (PMA), which thought the lighting of the promenade would best reflect the spirit of the season.

Port-of-Spain Mayor Murchison Brown made an appeal to corporate bodies benefiting from the ambience of the promenade, to contribute to the PMA like all other sponsors who helped with the lighting of the promenade.

Brown said certain "recalcitrant beneficiaries" have been seeing an improvement in their businesses, but have been avoiding contributions year long for the upkeep of the Brian Lara Promenade.

Brown said if they wanted to enjoy the benefits of the season, they must contribute yearly.

Members of the public who came out to view the lighting were treated to entertainment from the steelband group Excellent Stores Silver Stars and the parang group Los Alumnos de San Juan.
