Coconut vendors fined for littering

TWO coconut vendors were found guilty of littering and were ordered by a magistrate to pay a fine of $800.

The Marabella vendors — Abiola Wolfe, 30, of San Fernando and Rick Adams, 24, of South Oropouche — pleaded not guilty to the charge.

They appeared before Magistrate Maria Busby Earle-Caddle in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Fourth Court last Thursday to answer the charge of dumping coconut shells at Estate Road, Reform Village, on January 1, 2005.

Earle-Caddle heard from Sgt Florsis Griffith, the court’s prosecutor, that a team of municipal police officers, led by Insp Kenny Chandarjeet, went to Estate Road and saw Wolfe and Adams dumping coconut shells at the side of the road.

In their defence, Wolfe and Adams told the court that one of the tyres on the pick-up truck on which they had the coconut shells had become soft, and they decided to off-load the shells to "ease" off the load.

Wolfe and Adams said they had planned to return to the area to pick up the coconut shells after they had inflated the tyre.

In default of paying the fine, both vendors were ordered to serve four months hard labour. PC Bharata Persad laid the charge.
