MP Williams: I didn’t take bribes

Energy Minister Eric Willaims yesterday categorically denied allegations that he accepted bribes. Williams, Member of Parliament, Port-of-Spain South, stated in the following release: “Over the past months there have appeared in the media, reports of allegations made by one Mr Dansam Dhansook that I accepted bribes from him. In April of this year I stated in Parliament, categorically, that I have accepted no bribe from Mr Dhansook.  I repeat that now: Mr Dhansook’s allegations are untrue.

Until now, reposing confidence in the relevant authorities to conduct their investigations into these spurious allegations and, allowing the law to take its course, I have opted not to participate in the media frenzy generated by these false allegations. In every regard, I have co-operated fully with the State authorities in their investigations and I am confident that I will be vindicated. Nevertheless – and whilst I have respect for the entitlement of a free press to report in a democratic Trinidad and Tobago – the media’s right in this regard must be balanced with a fair regard for my right to insist that my reputation not be sullied without provable cause.

In its most recent rehashing of these allegations, the media has sacrificed responsibility on the altar of witch-hunting and sensationalism. This has caused and continues to cause me and my family deep anguish. I am not prepared any longer to stand by and allow my reputation to be destroyed.  In the circumstances I have passed this matter onto my Attorneys with instructions to them to take all appropriate action against Mr Dhansook and the relevant media houses.”
