Yorke among nine honoured by THA

CAPTAIN of the World Cup bound Soca Warriors Dwight Yorke, was among nine persons honoured by the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) which continued its week of activities in commemoration of its 25th Anniversary with a gala Awards ceremony and reception at Mason Hall Secondary School on Saturday night. President George Maxwell Richards and First Lady Dr Jean Ramjohn-Richards were among the guests at the well-attended function. Nine outstanding Tobagonians received awards for their contributions towards the island’s upliftment and development including William Mc Kenzie — longserving THA member, the late Rev John London, father of THA Chief Secretary Orville London and Papal Awardee Althea George.

Special awards were given to national footballers’ Dwight Yorke and Cyd Gray and also to Central Bank scholarship winner Kester Guy. Yorke’s award was accepted by his elder brother, Clint. The other recipients were educator Charles Dillon, Anglican Lay Minister Pamela Leslie and community activist and veteran photographer, Fabien Lynch. The Awards ceremony and reception were the highpoint of the activities which opened with a tree lighting ceremony at the Botanical Gardens in Scarborough on Wednesday night. It also included an exhibition and calypso competition and a youth explosion at the Dwight Yorke Stadium that featured top acts such as Maximus Dan and Destra Garcia. A thanksgiving service was held yesterday at the Roxborough Cultural Complex. The activities will culminate today with a mock plenary session that will be put on by secondary school students.
