Registrar gets DPP’s letter on Naraynsingh case
The letter of the Director of Public Prosecutions objecting to the assignment of Judge Herbert Volney to preside over the Cause List hearing of Seeromani Maraj-Naraynsingh was yesterday delivered to Registrar of the Supreme Court, Evelyn Peterson, sources confirmed. The letter was expected to protest against Volney presiding over the Cause List hearing and subsequent trial of Maraj-Naraynsingh. However, Peterson is a "conduit" and has no authority over the assignment of judges. As a result, she was expected to pass on the letter to the committee of judges which has responsibility for the assignment of cases. Ironically, Volney chairs this committee. The DPP’s letter was expected to state that it would be improper for Volney to preside over the matter considering Volney’s previous associations with it. Volney was the judge who sat on the Shawn Parris case, and who dismissed, in record time, the State’s application for the re-indictment of Dr Vijay Naraynsingh.
