Cops round up city vagrants

Twenty-nine vagrants were rounded up in an exercise co-ordinated by the Port-of-Spain CID and Port-of-Spain Division on Tuesday night.

The exercise, headed by Senior Supt Denoon and led by ASP Rodriguez, commenced at 10 pm and ended at 5 am.

Two social welfare officers also accompanied the officers on the exercise designed to remove homeless persons from the streets and rid the city of vagrants. The exercise is part of an initiative by the Ministry of Social Development, the mayor’s office and the Police Service to clean up the city. The exercise will continue throughout cities and boroughs around the country.

Those detained by the police were taken to a shelter at Riverside Plaza where they were told that vagrancy is an offence and they should desist from going back to the streets.
