Tears as soldier laid to rest
"God in his own wisdom gives life. We do not have human ability on our own, that is why we throw flowers into the grave with our loved one to show part of us has died," Father Matthew Ahye told mourners at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Independence Square, yesterday. Co-workers, relatives, and friends had gathered to attend the funeral service for Lance Cpl Marvin Ashton Solomon and, during the sad farewell, there were tears of sadness and wails of despair from those who remembered the man known as "Solos." The eulogy was officiated by the deceased’s sister, June Solomon, and detachment commander, Major Reid. PNM activist Mohammad Shabazz and Junior National Security Minister, Fitzgerald Hinds, also attended the service. Solomon’s body was placed on a gun carriage at the intersection of Long Circular Road and the Western Main Road, St James. The procession marched to the Military Cemetery at Long Circular Road, in St James where he received full military rites. Solomon enlisted in the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment on November 20, 1996. Solomon, 31, was killed last Sunday when the army vehicle he was driving crashed into a lamp-post along the Western Main Road, Westmoorings. According to reports, after dropping off a guest from a friend’s wedding reception, Solomon was returning to D Club at Chagville, when he hit a lamp-post and an embankment near a WASA pumping station. Fire Service officers were called in to cut Solomon out of the vehicle. He sustained injuries to his head, stomach and body.
