Two in court for brother’s murder

BROTHERS Samraj and Lutchmi Ramnarine of Debe yesterday appeared in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court charged with the murder of their older brother, Cassie. Unemployment Relief Worker Cassie, 52, died last Wednesday at the San Fernando General Hospital, five days after he was severely beaten with a piece of wood and cutlass at his Ramai Trace  home. Yesterday, Samraj, 42, and Lutchmi, 30, appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington in the First Magistrates’ Court to answer the murder charge. The accused brothers, who are both self-employed, were not called on to plead. Attorney Chaitram Sinanan, who represented both men, told Wellington that the defence was ready to proceed but needed certain documents. Court prosecutor Sgt Harricharan Kassie told the magistrate that he would furnish Sinanan with whatever “disclosures” he needed when it is practicable to do so. The brothers were remanded into custody to reappear on December 30, 2005.
