A free society where all are equal and safe
In his first Christmas message as Political Leader of the United National Congress, Winston Dookeran has pledged to do everything in his power to build a society where all are free, equal, safe and proud to be Trinbagonian. The letterhead of Dookeran’s press release for the first time read, “The Office of the Political Leader of the United National Congress” (instead of Office of the Member of Parliament for St Augustine) but the address on the letterhead was the same — Dookeran’s constituency office at Pasea Main Road, Tunapuna. As he wished the entire nation a very merry and peaceful Christmas 2005, Dookeran urged the population to seek to build a better and more cohesive society. He noted that this could be achieved by each person becoming his brother’s keeper.
The UNC leader noted that while many people will be able to celebrate the season, “for too many of our brothers and sisters, Christmas will just be another day.” “It is my hope that the spirit of giving and sharing that pervades this festive season will continue throughout the year,” he said. Dookeran also appealed to the people of this country that, as they celebrate over the season, it was important to give thanks to God “for all that He has done for us over the years.” “As the Christmas lights sparkle, let them inspire us to return to spiritual lives in which we take others into consideration and allow the values of all good people regardless of religion, race, creed or class to guide us,” he said.
