Man held for extradition to the US
A MAN who had been freed on an extradition warrant was yesterday rearrested and is now wanted in the United States for conspiracy to traffic cocaine. Ramesh Doon is wanted for trafficking cocaine into the United States between 2000 and 2001. He was arrested at his home at Crosby Street, Aranjuez, and brought to the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court. Doon was arrested with Jitram Sookdeo, Ronald Rackal, Hafeez Mohammed, Indaryartee Dwarika and Andre Ravi Persad at a warehouse at Orange Field Road, Freeport, on January 22, 2001, after they were found with 542 kilos of cocaine stacked among cassava by members of the Organised Crime and Narcotics Bureau (OCNU), led by Senior Supt Raymond Craig. Dwarika is currently serving a 70-month sentence in Florida. Rackal was jailed for 21 years and Mohammed, 11, after they pleaded guilty in the US in 2005. Sookdeo jumped bail and is believed to be hiding in Venezuela. Doon was held at his home yesterday by officers of the OCNU and the Firearms Bureau, who executed a provisional warrant for his arrest. He appeared in the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Eighth Court before Chief Magistrate Sherman Mc Nicolls yesterday. When Mc Nicolls asked if he had an attorney, Doon replied that it was Om Lalla, but Lalla was not in court. Doon was denied bail. Appearing on behalf of the US government was attorney David West. Hearing resumes today.
