MLIO boss: Thrust is to expand small, micro business sector
Terrence Banister, programme coordinator of the Morvant Laventille Improve-ment Organisation (MLIO), has said MLIO’s new training thrust is aimed at expanding the small and micro business sector. It will address basic social issues such as criminal behaviour, poverty, and self-destructive attitudes which have engulfed "behind-the-bridge" communities for many years, he said in a press statement. MLIO has always prided itself on being a proactive, demand-driven response NGO, dedicated to improving the circumstances of "grass roots communities" for the past four decades, he noted. Youths now have an added incentive: they can now pursue the computer-aided literacy and entrepreneurial development training programme and also get their driver’s licence. This, he said, will take effect when classes begin on February 6. "Facilitating the acquisition of driver’s permits to its clients is a direct response to addressing self-esteem and opportunities for employment in the transportation industry," said Banister. Registration for the programme begins from today at the Spree Simon Facility, Picton Road; and the Spiritual Shouter Baptist Learning Institute. Interested persons can also call 712-0979.
