Prepare for ‘Red Alert’
THE National Trade Union Centre (NATUC) is angry with Prime Minister Patrick Manning and is calling on members to prepare for what it calls "Red Alert." It plans to spell out what it means by "Red Alert" during a press conference this morning at the Seamen and Waterfront Union’s (SWWTU) conference centre on Wrightson Road. NATUC’s anger stems from the fact that the Prime Minister had agreed to meet the national labour body last Friday, to discuss matters affecting both the trade union movement and the national community. According to NATUC, the meeting was postponed at the Prime Minister’s request, and it was the third consecutive time he had done so. NATUC said in a statement, "We are alarmed that the concerns, and the priority which NATUC gives to the legislative protection for workers and other vulnerable sections of the society, are not shared by the Prime Minister and the government of Trinidad and Tobago."
