UN funds to help Integrity Commission
THE office of the Attorney General has secured funding from the United Nations Development Fund for technical assistance in the strengthening of Trinidad and Tobago’s anti-corruption initiatives. Attorney General John Jeremie on Friday signed an agreement with UNDP resident representative, Dr Inyang Ebong-Harstrup for US$50,000 (TT$314,500) in partnership funding to be used in assisting the government in the implementation of its national anti-corruption strategy and the establishment of an independent commission against corruption through the restructuring of the existing Integrity Commission. The institutional strengthening exercise is projected to cost US$117,500 (TT$739,075) with Government contributing US$67,500 (TT$424,575). Under the proposed programme, the Integrity Commission is to be restructured with a mandate to investigate all allegations of corruption and to initiate prosecutions in both the public and private sectors, with the consent of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
