Police executed my unborn baby’s father

Nine months pregnant, the girlfriend of Rueben Atiba, the man shot in the head by police at Beetham Estate on Thursday, has insisted that the father of her unborn child was executed by the police. Atiba succumbed to his injuries at 10 pm on Thursday night.

Allana Villafana, 22, who is due to give birth any day now, feels that her boyfriend did not deserve to die the way he did.

As tears streamed down her face yesterday, Villafana related that Atiba was at home on Thursday when a large contingent of police and soldiers swooped down on the area. She said she begged Atiba not to leave the house, but he insisted that he wanted to see what was happening.

Clutching her stomach, the weeping woman added that minutes later she heard Atiba pleading for his life, saying that he had a problem with his heart.

In recalling the incident, Villafana said when she and others tried to get to Atiba, they were prevented from doing so by soldiers.

She said she later heard several explosions and did not hear a sound from Atiba. She then saw his almost lifeless body being taken to a police vehicle. "Blood was seeping from his head and he appeared to be dead, but we were again prevented from seeing him," said the grieving woman.

When the police raids were done, she heard, the police had claimed that Atiba fired at them, and they returned fire.

"That is a complete lie," insisted Villafana, who is now concerned about her future. She is worried about the welfare of her unborn child and is calling on the authorities to order a probe into the killing.

Investigators yesterday said Atiba had matters pending in court and was a suspect in several murders. They added that he was considered a menace to society and was not a "saint" as he was being made out to be. He was also described as a "hitman" and leader of a gang whose members have reportedly murdered 15 persons.
