Oil spill in Mayaro waters

RESIDENTS of Mayaro and Guayagua-yare had a close shave with a toxic oil and gas spill yesterday. Fortunately, there were no health risks when the spillage of low octane fuel was quickly mopped up.

It was at about 11 am when the spill occurred some three miles out at sea at Single Point Mooring. Located south of the bpTT facilities at Galeota Point, the spill occurred when a hose broke at a flange attached to a tanker which was about to be loaded with crude oil.

In a statement issued yesterday, bpTT stated that the extent of the spill was estimated at ten barrels of low octane fuel. When the spill occurred, a light sheen was seen in waters west of the Columbus Channel. It was approximately one mile in length.

Officials from the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) were immediately contacted. BPTT yesterday stated that the company’s Incident Management and Business Support teams, were immediately dispatched to assess and manage the situation.

A release from the EMA stated that booms were laid in the waters to prevent the extensive spreading of the spillage.

EMA stated that the spill posed no threat to the mainland, but several residents told Newsday that some fishermen suffered losses.
