Taxi driver escapes kidnappers

A CENTRAL Trinidad taxi driver is nursing minor wounds to his body after escaping from the trunk of a moving vehicle on the North Coast Road.

According to reports, Naresh Singh, 19, of Charlieville, was plying his car for hire between Chaguanas and Charlieville at 2.30 pm on Thursday, when he picked up three men who asked to be taken to Orchard Gardens.

On leaving the taxi stand, one of the men pointed a gun to the back of Singh’s head and ordered him out the car. He was then beaten, blindfolded, gagged and tied up, and thrown in the trunk of the car.

While the kidnapper was driving, Singh was able to open the trunk of the car while it was in motion, jump into the road and flag down a passing police car. He then realised that he was on the North Coast Road, Maracas Bay.

The police were able to intercept the stolen vehicle, but the men escaped by running down a steep precipice in the La Filette area.

Up to press time, police and Fire Services officers were still combing the La Filette hillside in search of the three men.

Meanwhile, Singh was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was treated and discharged.
