Udecott: PM’s house a priority
THE URBAN Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago (Udecott) yesterday said no decision has been made on how President’s Grounds in St Ann’s will be upgraded or whether it will serve as an extension of the Prime Minister’s official residence at La Fantasie, St Ann’s. Udecott executives told Newsday yesterday that designs for a new look President’s Grounds are still in the conceptual stage and no decision has been taken yet on what will be built there or if the grounds would be used for any special purpose. The executives said Udecott’s priority at this time is the construction of a new official residence for the Prime Minister. Manning and his wife, Education Minister Hazel Manning, relocated to a temporary house in Federation Park in late 2005 to facilitate the rennovation. Udecott executives said the old La Fantasie residence was demolished last week. They said once the Prime Minister is back in the official residence, then attention will be placed on how to upgrade facilities at President’s Grounds. However, former UNC attorney-general Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj did not buy Udecott’s story, claiming this was nothing more than a "complete abuse of power" by Manning and that the PM’s motive was similar to his (Manning’s) longstanding desire to move Parliament out of the Red House and establish his office there.
