Two freed of murder
Two Cunupia men on a murder charge were yesterday freed after the State conceded to a no-case submission that there was no evidence in the case to prosecute the men for murder. The trial judge agreed and accused Trevor Fung and Vinod Ramkissoon were set free. The duo was accused of killing 75-year-old pensioner Moses Bullock at his home on the corner of Pundit Trace and Madrass Road, Cunupia, on November 29, 1999. The State had called 11 witnesses since the trial started last Friday before Justice Alice Yorke Soo-Hon in the Port-of-Spain High Court. At the close of the prosecution’s case yesterday, defence attorneys Keith Scotland and Oscar King made no-case submissions. Senior State prosecutor Jeron Joseph told Justice Soo-Hon that having considered the evidence in the case, which is all that the prosecution had to present, and having consulted with the Director of Public Prosecutions, he is unable to resist the submissions made by defence attorneys. Soo-Hon later instructed the jury to return a formal verdict of not guilty. Bullock was found in the kitchen of his house, gagged and with his hands tied behind his back. His wife Basdaye had also been tied up, but was unharmed. Police said they also found Fung and Ramkissoon hiding in the house, but both men denied that allegation. A third man, Jason Antoine, was also charged with Bullock’s murder but pleaded guilty last year to the lesser count of manslaughter and was sentenced to seven years hard labour. Newsday learnt that the DPP had failed in his attempt to get Antoine to testify against Fung and Ramkissoon.
