Carolyn too, says she nah leavin’
Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan does not think that she should resign as a senator. Seepersad-Bachan is the person who Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj is expected to replace when he is ready to come into the Senate. She was demoted along with Sadiq Baksh in the seating order on Tuesday after Ato Boldon was sworn in. Seepersad-Bachan said the changes in the seating arrangements showed a "total disregard" for Sadiq Baksh in particular, considering the fact that he was a former government minister and the party organiser. Newly appointed Boldon was put to sit ahead of both Seepersad-Bachan and Baksh. Speaking with Newsday yesterday Seepersad-Bachan said she gave a commitment that she would continue to work with the UNC. "And I will continue to do so until I am not allowed to," she said. She acknowledged that many persons were saying that Panday’s statement — that there would be more resignations and he would accept them — meant that he wanted herself and Baksh to quit (like Roy Augustus). "But I don’t bother with these kinds of messages," she said. She said it was unfortunate that Political Leader Winston Dookeran was not consulted on the appointment of Boldon, nor was he invited (like Jack Warner) to witness the swearing in of the new senator. Asked if she was going to the Mid-Centre Mall rally, Seepersad-Bachan said she hadn’t given much thought to this. "I never had a problem with Maharaj. But I have a problem with the process. It is causing more convulsion and disunity and more negative fallout than when Maharaj first left," she said, adding that if this is what is happening in the name of unity, then what kind of unity is it? She said the party had to do something about allaying the fears that people had, that the "unity" will collapse after the UNC gets into government. "We lost government the last time because of this kind of conflict," she said. She said the party had to find a way to solve its internal problems, or "else you are spinning top in mud."
