53 MURDERS IN 54 DAYS
THE murder rate in 2006 continues at almost "one a day" with the killing of a man from Enterprise Village, Chaguanas, at 7.45 pm on Thursday. According to reports, unemployed Christopher Baptiste, 32, of Goodwill Trace, was liming near a parlour with a group of men on Ghandi Road, Laventille. A man approached the group and fired several shots at Baptiste. The group of fled the scene, leaving Baptiste on the ground. Baptiste was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He was the 53rd person killed in 54 days. Sources told Newsday that Baptiste went to visit a girl and was shot by a friend of the girl who had warned him about visiting the area. Police believe the killing is gang-related. Baptiste was shot five times in the stomach and leg. Visiting the scene were Sgt Stewart and Sgt Franklin. WPC Patrick of the Homicide (North) Bureau is investigating.
