Man knocked down crossing PBR — dies at hospital
The man identified as Terry Girdharry was crossing the PBR in the vicinity of the Tunapuna market just after 7 pm.
Eyewitnesses told Newsday a maxi taxi travelling west stopped to allow the man to cross the road, but a panel van driven by police officers attached to the Anti-Kidnapping Squad overtook the maxi and struck Girdharry. The impact threw him into the air. Police investigators confirmed the incident saying Girdharry died at hospital at about 1.30 am yesterday. Within minutes of the accident, a crowd gathered on the scene. Two soldiers, Privates Sheldon Lancaster and Julien Pajotte who were travelling east in a regiment jeep stopped to give assistance. The soldiers kept talking to Girdharry in an effort to keep him from losing consciousness.
During that conversation Girdharry disclosed his age and said he was a security officer employed with Imjin Security Company. He said he had just completed duties in Chaguanas. The Emergency Health Services (EHS) ambulance arrived about 20 minutes after the accident and took Girdharry to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex at Mount Hope.
Tunapuna police are continuing investigations.
