Greene, Mangroo for Southern Games
AN EIGHT-man cycling team led by Elijah Greene has been selected to participate in the coming Southern Games carded for next weekend (April 1 and 2) at Guaracara Park, Point-a-Pierre.
The riders were selected based on their performances for the season so far.
Greene leads the chart having secured the most points from the newly implemented National Points System which will be used to determine the top cyclist at the end of the year.
The selected riders were confirmed by a committee of the Cycling Federation following a trial session at Guaracara Park on Wednesday last.
The other cyclists are Azikwe Kellar, the 2005 Cycling Federation’s representative for the First Citizens Bank (FCB) Award, Joshua Alexander, Stephen Mangroo, Marc Codrington of Oilbelt Sonics, Winzie Mohammed of Madonna Wheelers, Sheldon Ramjit (Hummingbird Wheelers) and Haseem Mc Lean of Southclaine.
Johnny Mc Khell is the manager of the team while Noel Luces is the coach. Junior Griffith is the team mechanic. Meanwhile Barry Luces secured the top spot in the feature 16-lap race at Guaracara Park when he disposed of a large field of top cyclists.
With the ride he cemented his position on a team that is expected to put on an exciting performance at the games.
David Alves earned himself the runner-up position while Alexander, who won the previous main race at the Arima Cycling Event at the Velodrome last weekend secured third. Ramjit Jonathan Rawlins and Nigel Xavier claimed the fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively.
Xavier also won the Devil Takes The Hindmost race for Category three, four and five riders. Martin Vernon was second and Roger Simon claimed the third place finish.
In the Category 1 and 2 Devil Takes The Hindmost event, Alexander got the better of Greene for the winner’s position. Greene took the runner-up position and Marc Codrington and Luces took the other two places.
Sherwin Semper won the event for veterans 40 years and over while Emmanuel Mc Kenzie secured the second place finish.
Among the Juniors Rawlins again added another medal to his cabinet when he won the 1000 metres event. Codrington, Luces and Lyndon Brooks claimed the other places on the night of cycling.
