Barrackpore mom slain

This was how Deoraj Bissoon described the slaying of his mother, Sybil Bridgemohan, 57, whose throat was slit by an attacker at her Barrackpore home on Sunday night.

“I have no idea why this happened. This was a silent, premeditated murder,” Bissoon said yesterday.

Although his mother was killed, Bissoon’s sister Donna was spared, thanks to a text message for help she sent to a friend.

Police believe the message not only saved Bissoon’s 17-year-old sister but also stopped the family’s home from being burnt down.

When police arrived at the home, Bridgemohan was already dead and the suspect was found holding a knife to Donna’s neck. The suspect threatened to kill her then burn their bodies in the house. Police detained the 34-year-old Princes Town man.

Bridgemohan, a cook employed at Ren’s Restaurant and Bar, a short distance from her Gunness Trace, Scale No 7 home where she lived with Donna, began to fear for her life several months ago, her employer Renuka Sankar said yesterday.

“Only yesterday (Sunday) she said she feel she going to dead,” Sankar said yesterday.

Sankar said Bridgemohan had shared information about the suspect with her.

“I used to pity her,” said Sankar. “I told her she could live with me. She tell me she will talk about it tomorrow.”

Hours before she was slain, Brigdemohan went to a cricket match in the village, said Sankar.

Brigdemohan was last seen around 4 pm, police said, when she telephoned Donna and asked her to bring home a box of food.

Police report that at around 6 pm, Donna returned home with sister Sharmaine, 24. Donna asked someone for her mother and was told she was not there. Sharmaine left the house.

Police state Donna saw her mother lying motionless on a bed covered with a sheet. Police said the girl was then attacked.

Donna told a neighbour she was bound with duct tape. The suspect, however, was unaware the girl was holding her cell phone. She sent a message to a friend and the police were contacted.

A party of officers from the Barrackpore police station and Homicide Bureau, southern division, visited the scene. Bridgemohan’s body was taken to the Forensic Science Centre, St James, for an autopsy yesterday.

Acting Sgt Ali is continuing the investigation.
