HOT DEBATE ON ENVIRONMENT

Staff at the EMA prepared the topics: “What is responsible for flooding?” “But I need a house — the conflict between the environment and providing for a growing population;” “To be noisy is to be inconsiderate;” “Black smoke ain’t no joke;” “Can wetlands be relocated?” and “Eco- tourism to our advantage.”

Competing in the contest were students of the Arima Government Secondary School, Arima Senior Comprehensive, ASJA Girls’ College (Charlieville) and Cunupia High School. The topic was: “What is responsible for flooding?” Holy Faith Convent Couva chose: ‘But I need a house — conflict between the environment and providing for a growing population.”

Naparima College and Malabar Composite School debated the effect noise has on society.

St Mary’s College put on the presentation — “Can Wetlands be relocated?” St Stephens College opted to speak on the advantage eco-tourism has on society.

Lone Tobago competitor — Signal Hill Secondary School — put forward a convincing argument on the topic: “Black smoke ain’t no joke.”

First lady Jean Ramjohn-Richards delivered greetings at the start of the competiton.
