Last hoorah at the Savannah

His performance was like the “sting in the tail” of what turned out to be a six-hour event. Showing he still had it in him, the former Soca Monarch and Road March champion climbed on top of several speaker boxes (his trademark) as he performed one last time at the Savannah.

Superblue had the audience dancing and jumping in the aisle of the Grand Stand as he went down to meet them. He performed his hits “Ethel,” “Soca Baptist” and “Old Time Religion,” which he used to take the people out of the Savannah on the day that marked the Liberation of the Spiritual Shouter Baptists.

Thirty minutes before Superblue performed, Shadow also had the audience jumping to his trademark hit “Bassman.” Bill Trotman also left a lasting impression with his performance of “School Days.”

“Kaiso Kaiso,” a show billed as a gift to the nation was able to pull several hundred “die hard” calypso fans to the Grand Stand at the Savannah. It featured calypsos from 1956 such as “Jean and Dinah” by calypso King of the World, Sparrow to “Kaiso Kaiso” by Luta.

Several calypso monarchs and Road March champions performed their winning songs to the appreciative audience.

At about 10.55 pm Gypsy had the audience singing along with him as he performed “Pick Yourself Up” so too did Brother Valentino with his immortal classic “Life Is A Stage.” But it was Singing Sandra who at 12.40 am started the bacchanal with her rendition of “Sexy Employers” (Die with my Dignity) as she entered the Grand Stand.

Here are some of the highlights of Kaiso Kaiso.
