LOCAL GOVT TO MOVE CELL
ARFECTT, and residents met with the councillors, after protesting against a cell tower, which is located at William Trace and Waterloo Road.
Mejias told ARFECTT that there has been enquiries about the cell tower since January, by the administration of the Corporation, and different communication bodies have denied ownership of the cell site.
“A stop notice was sent to the cell tower location at Waterloo Road,” she said, adding, “Digicel, Laqtel and TSTT, claimed it is not their own.”
Mejias added that the owner(s) of the cell site was not given approval by Town and Country to build the cell tower.
“Today we will be passing a resolution, and they will be given a stop notice, in 28 days if no one owns the tower, it will be taken down,” she said.
She continued: “The councillors and electorals live in the district, and if there are problems we will also be affected.”
Meanwhile, the residents, held placards that read, “I am more important than your mobile,” “I am the future,” “More service less children,” while the meeting was in progress outside the Corporation at Centenary Street, in Tunapuna. However, Chairman of ARFECTT, Eddie Reid said that he was not against the building of cell towers.
“We are against illegal, unsafe, cell sites, in residential areas. We welcome improvement,” Reid said.
Reid also said he has faith in Planning Minister, Camille Robinson-Regis, to support the residents and remove the tower. Spokesperson for the residents of Waterloo Road, Pundit Sat Sharma, said that the radiation is hazardous to the community, and they could be affected.
