Rangers ecstatic at winning debut
The W Connection camp is generally satisfied with their comprehensive 3-0 drubbing of United Petrotrin on Saturday when the 2006 season opened.
Technical director Stuart Charles-Fervier told ttproleague.com, “It was a very good showing by the boys. We played some good football and it’s a good start, but there are areas I would still like to see us sharpen up on.”
“I was happy to see us getting the ball behind the net, but our challenge now is consistency. That is the only way we will win the league this year. We must perform on a consistent basis,” Charles-Fevrier said.
Connection got a superb double from former National Under-23 striker Kendall Davis and the other item from seasoned skipper Earl Jean.
The W Connection team looked a different outfit on paper with their entire midfield taking on a local flavour — young midfielders Andrei Pacheco, Hughton Hector, Nicholson Thomas and Andre Toussaint, players who have come through the youth ranks at the team.
W Connection will next face Starworld Strikers at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Saturday.
As for the new kids on the block, Superstar Rangers, the St Ann’s unit is still revelling in their 2-0 win over Tobago United. The club’s recently appointed coach Anthony Streete admitted the team is overjoyed at registering their first victory in the T&T Pro League.
“I know having come from the Super League last season we will have a lot to prove, but I thought that was a fantastic start against a Tobago team that gave us a good fight, and our boys are delighted,” Streete said.
“I still feel we made a couple errors that I will seek to correct before our next match against United Petrotrin,” he said.
“Our ambitions are clear this season. We know we don’t have the pedigree to win the League this season, but we want to give a good showing and finish in the top six and come next year we hope to mount a serious challenge for silverware,” he said.
