Water woes in southland

Officials at the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) told Newsday that a malfunction at the operations section of the Desalination Plant triggered an unreliable supply since the Plant was forced to reduce its water output. The problem was discovered on Friday evening.

Hard hit areas include La Romaine, Palmiste, Timital, Claxton Bay, Penal, Palo Seco, Vessigny, San Fernando, Pleasa-ntville, Gulf View, La Brea, Siparia, Erin, Quarry Village, Debe, Santa Flora, Avocat, Fyzabad and Vance River. WASA officials said some of its customers would be experiencing a reduction in their supply and a low pressure supply. However, they assured that a truck borne supply will be provided to the affected residents.

WASA deputy General Manager (Customer Service) Allan Poon King yesterday said the State-owned utility was doing its best in having the problem rectified in the shortest possible time.

He added that technicians were working on the problem which required extensive repairs and he had hoped to have the plant back in operation on the weekend, but this did not happen.

Poon King admitted the problem “is an ongoing one” and asked affected residents to “bear with us” for a few more days.

“We are working day and night in trying to rectify the problem” Poon King added.

Poon King said he was not in a position to say exactly what caused the malfunction, but assured that the affected residents’ water woes would soon be over.
