Let there be joy and peace
Archbishop Gilbert writing in today’s Catholic News emphasises the power of faith, particularly at Easter.
He noted: “As we celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord, we recall that the two key words about Easter in the Scriptures and the liturgical tradition of the Church are: joy and peace.
“The question logically becomes, ‘are we personally experiencing joy and peace as we celebrate Easter?’
“If we are, it means we understand and have internalised the meaning of what we celebrate. We can sincerely sing, alleluia! If in truth, we are not, there has to be a reason. Is it possible that even though it is Easter, we are experiencing another example of a ‘disconnect’ between faith and life?”
Archbishop Gilbert added: “The Resurrection of the Lord is the confirmation of all Christ’s works and teachings. It is the definitive proof of His divine nature, His divine authority, the fulfillment of the promises of the Old Testament and the fulfilment of the promises that Jesus made during His lifetime.
The data provided by the Scriptures makes clear that there were no witnesses to the actual Resurrection. The testimony of Scripture about the Resurrection is the empty tomb and the post-Resurrection appearances of Jesus. It is a testimony of faith from the early Church. We accept in faith that testimony.”
The Resurrection of the Lord opens the door to the doctrine of the Church about the resurrection of the dead at the end of time when the Lord returns in glory.”
“Joy and peace should be our companions at Easter,” Archbishop Gilbert stated.
