Beenie Man thrills Tobago
This apology was given by international recording reggae superstar, Beenie Man, after he was cautioned by the police for using obscene language during his first ever Tobago performance at the Dwight Yorke Stadium car park on Saturday.
About 20 minutes into his performance, Tobago lawmen had cause to come on stage and warn the promoter about the consequences of the entertainer’s “choice of words”.
However, as soon as he recognised his “mistake” Beenie apologised to the stern looking officers and the captivated crowd that seemed to be unconcerned with the incident.
Beenie’s performance followed that of local artistes Ziggy Ranking and King David and members of his Ruff Cut band, Kirt Davis and Silver Cat who hyped the crowd with their own hits.
But it was Beenie’s appearance on stage shortly after 1 am that sent 5,000 and over patrons into a screaming frenzy.
Decked in a suit of red and white with a drawing of cartoon character Snoopy (the dog) on the left pants-leg Beenie belched out hit after dancing hit in a performance that lasted just over two hours and appeared surprised then amused that the crowd knew the entire words to most of his hits.
His commands to “Row The Boat” and “World Dance” did not go unheeded by the crowd that consisted of both locals and Easter visitors who had flocked the venue from as early as 7 pm.
Following his performance, Beenie told reporters that he was pleased with the love he had received from Tobago and had to ensure that he gave them their monies worth although it probably meant being tired for his performance in Mayaro yesterday.
Beenie promised to be back in the near future but said that he was currently concentrating on the release of his next album.
A relieved Kevin Cornwall, Director of Operations of promoters, Pro Audio Sound Reinforcement Limited, told Newsday that he was glad that the show turned out successfully despite the initial hiccups.
The concert kicked off the Easter activities on the island which continues today with the annual Mt Pleasant Sports Day and continues tomorrow with the popular Buccoo Goat and Crab Race festival.
