DVD focuses on autism

The DVD, which was funded in part by bpTT SOCA Awards, aims at creating public awareness of autism. It comprises a main menu containing a list of some of the early warning signs of autism spectrum disorder and a 20-minute presentation called A Silver Lining which was narrated by Gideon Hanoomansingh of Premiere Video Productions.

Autism is a lifelong brain disorder that affects socialising, learning and communication skills. It is estimated that the diagnosis of autism is increasing but it generally affects one in every 500 children born, and is four times more common in boys than in girls.

It is estimated that over 3,000 persons have an autism spectrum disorder in Trinidad and Tobago.

As the presentation explains, “Individuals with autism too often become adults who are marginalised, misunderstood, mistreated and forgotten. Therefore the need is great to increase awareness of the disorder.”

The DVD outlines the puzzling, heartbreaking and challenging problems faced by parents, caregivers and teachers of those with autism, citing examples in both Trinidad and Tobago.

It also indicates some early intervention methods used for children with autism and stresses the need for public awareness and acceptance of persons with autism so that their lives may be enhanced and enriched.

The DVD also presents some history of the ASTT, and what it has been doing to help families and individuals with autism despite its limited resources.

The DVD also explains how anyone may identify and help these unique people and promote the ASTT’s cause.

Persons wishing to obtain a copy of A Silver Lining are asked to donate $200 to ASTT to help with production costs of the DVD.
