Glen scores double in MLS
Chivas led 1-0 entering the last six minutes of the match, but Glen evened the score in the 84th minute and then found the winner in stoppage time to hand a painful defeat to Chivas, who had looked set to beat the defending champions in the huge Los Angeles derby.
A crowd of 27,000 at The Home Depot Centre watched Glen miss at least four good chances to score in the first half when he tormented the Chivas defence with his pace.
And former US international Ante Razov made LA pay for those missed opportunities by sending Chivas ahead immediately after the second half started.
But Glen in only his second week at LA after a transfer from the Colorado Rapids, netted two late goals to earn the Galaxy a 2-1 win.
The Galaxy evened the match six minutes from the scheduled finish when Landon Donovan headed on a long throw for Glen to score at the far post.
Glen then struck the match-winner deep into stoppage time, again with an assist from Donovan.
The US international star, a key player in the Americans’ World Cup hopes in Germany this summer, dribbled the ball from his own half into the attacking third and sent an accurate cross into the box where Glen connected with a first-time volley past Brad Guzan in the Chivas goal.
“It feels great to score two goals,” Glen said after the match.
“I was walking a tight rope, I missed like four good chances in the first half and I had to get those back. But, it is not just me. I scored two goals, but it is a whole team effort and the team played well,” he added.
Coach Steve Sampson lauded the team and Glen’s recovery after the break.
“I liked the fact that Cornell Glen finished his chances in the second half, he was very down on himself at half-time and the guys picked him up. He wanted to make a statement in the second half,” Sampson said.
For LA, Jamaican defender Tyrone Marshall was substituted in the 63rd minute while the St Vincent and the Grenadines veteran Ezra Hendrickson saw all the action from the bench for Chivas.
Elsewhere, the Kansas City Wizards, which had Jamaican Shavar Thomas and Trinidadian Scott Sealy getting playing time, beat the New England Revolution 1-0 at Arrowhead Stadium to stay top of the Eastern Conference.
Thomas played the entire game and Sealy came on just before the end of the match that saw Jimmy Conrad’s third minute goal deciding the game and giving the Wizards their third consecutive win of the new season. Jamaican midfielder Jermaine Hue was one of the substitutes not used by the Wizards.
New England had Grenada’s Shalrie Joseph in their line-up and TT’s Avery John on the bench as they suffered their first loss of the season.
Real Salt Lake (RSL) came from behind to draw 1-1 with the New York Red Bulls at the Rice Eccles Stadium.
Jason Kreis got an 89th minute equaliser for RSL after Amado Guevara had given New York a 77th minute lead.
Jamaica-born Andy Williams, Jeff Cunningham and Ryan Johnson all saw playing time for RSL, who had Atiba Harris of St Kitts and Nevis on the bench.
Cunningham and Williams both went close to scoring but failed to convert opportunities in front of goal.
In other matches, unbeaten Western Conference leaders FC Dallas drew 2-2 with Colorado at Invesco Field, Columbus Crew and Chicago Fire drew 1-1 at Columbus Crew Stadium, and DC United beat Houston Dynamo 2-0 at RFK Stadium to stay second in the Eastern Conference. (CMC)
